The Foundation

Have you ever considered the role gratitude plays in your life? I know we were probably taught to say “thank you” as a child, but why is it important? God obviously thinks it’s important. Consider the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Wow! Did you catch that? God says we’re to give thanks in everything!

For starters, always being thankful is tough. That means being thankful for the bad stuff of life as well as for the good stuff. I suppose the first Why of gratitude is because it pleases God. That should be enough. Right? God is so amazing that you can find that when He commands us to do something, we are usually the beneficiaries. Gratitude is like that.

Did you know that doctors tell us that being grateful helps us to sleep better? It improves our relationships, and it helps us to be more productive. Gratitude even lowers blood pressure, and it help us overcome depression.

When the Apostle Paul was inspired to write that giving thanks in everything is God’s will, it’s because God loves you so much. He wants you to experience joy and fullness. John 10:10 says that Jesus came so you could have an abundant life. While this abundance involves a number of things, gratitude is one choice we need to make along the path of life. So, give thanks for everything in your life. Take a minute to make a list of things right now for which you can be thankful.

Indeed. Thanks for your comment Edwina. It’s been a difficult year in a lot of ways – more difficult for some than others. As you know, God is always faithful, however. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
